Rusted out rear shock tower Posted by davecl [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I thought I'd share this experience, since I posted a question about it last week and no one had a reply.
I got my son a '94 NG900 with 64K miles on it, pretty cheap and in good shape. The one thing I didn't check -- lesson learned -- was the condition of the shock and strut towers. I didn't occur to me that this car, without a speck of rust and fairly low miles, could have a problem.
Well, in a few weeks the RR shock punched through into the trunk, holing the fabric trunk liner. I did some checking and found this is a common problem with older C900s, but I didn't find anyone who had seen it on an NG900 yet.
Anyway, a local body shop cut out the rot and welded in a new shock tower. It looks to me like they actually got a matching tower from a wreck or something -- it matches perfectly. They did a nice job welding it in, sealed up everything and sprayed the wheel well with some sort of black weather-proof material. It looks very solid and almost impossible to detect. Car is now tight and rattle-free.
It was $350 and the guy I bought it from coveraged half, even though the 30-day warranty had expired. I've seen notes from guys who said they've had this done for $120 or so, but I don't see how that's possible. This involved parts and it looks like a fair amount of labor.
Anyway, my advice is check up in the underside of the mount of the RR shock on NG900s. It looks like dirt and salt get packed up in there and rot it out. The other three mounts are solid, but this one was gone. Blast it out with a hose once in a while. When it goes, it's fixable but it will cost a few hundred.
