As long as you lock the car with the key, you can also unlock the car with the key and drive.
You can lock the car with the key and unlock with the remote, no problem.
You CANNOT lock the car with remote and unlock with the key, that's where the line is drawn.
I think the meaning behind this is that you can easily take the VIN of a car and have a key made from an unscroupulous (or trusting) dealer and steal the car if it is only locked with the key.
If the car battery is dead, you can't start and drive the car anyway. You just unlock the car with the key, hook a charger up to the battery and press the remote to disarm the car when the battery (and alarm) goes live.
So if you are planning to use your remote, I advice you to get a spare remote and have it programmed to your car as soon as possible.
Even with the factory Saab scantool (Tech 2) I cannot go in and disarm a car that has been locked with the remote. But as long as the car is disarmed, I can always program and deprogram remotes for the car.
