I replaced my thermostat last winter (which was a very cold undertaking in an unheated garage) and for the rest of last winter it was fine (meaning it reached the middle of the temperature gauge quickly) but as it got cold up here this year, I noticed it does not reach the regular temperature unless I am idling. Driving, it hovers around 1/4 up the gauge. I checked to see if the thermostat was working at all by feeling the radiator coolant pipe from the engine as my car warmed up, and sure enough it worked fine (it was cold until 1/4 way up the gauge) then it quickly got hot. Does this mean I have the wrong temperature thermostat? Because it seems to be working perfectly otherwise. Maybe the temperature sensor as mentioned in other posts?
