Yes, you will need a low restriction air filter if you bump up the HP.
Many folks around here just use the stock airbox with a K&N panel filter, as it already draws pretty cold air from behind the headlight. Then, modify the air inlet tube to use a thin walled 3" PVC duct. Like Dean mentioned search for 3" duct mod or airbox mod. Also, search for the TBTC mod.
These motors are pretty robust, and if they are in proper shape (well maintained good synth oil, regular tranny fluid changes etc...) they can handle a lot. However, they do need preliminary breathing modifications:
TBTC (Throttle body transition casting), 3" intake, probably a 3" downpipe with sportcat for the numbers you are shooting for, Saab sport or full 3" exhaust would take care of the breathing.
You could stop at TBTC and 3" intake if you are looking for subtle improvement, but at stage 3+ numbers you need to consider intake --> exhaust breathing.
You are also going to want to look at suspension/steering mods to handle the torque steer from the power increases. Look into:
Steering rack clamp/brace, 22mm rear sway bar to start and maybe poly front suspension bushings and a subframe brace.
Search the performance board for what these motors are capable of. Saabs are very tunable, and make great sleepers! Just make sure that your motor is in good shape before throwing the $'s at high perf mods. Have fun!
Hope this helps,
Don
