As the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Shortly after the phone call with Customer Assistance where I pointed out the absurdity of having to wait for someone to return from vacation to have my car repaired, the service manager at Blue Grass Saab called to say that they'd approved the engine replacement under the sludge warranty. They're going to fix it for free (or almost free -- it doesn't cover the cost of the oil or filter or any "extra' parts, whatever that might be...).
So the parts have been ordered and they expect to have the job done by the end of next week, roughly a month after the car was carried to the dealer. I'm very curious to see how the car drives with a new engine.
Regarding my driving habits, I live about 8-10 miles from my office, with a good part of that on a fairly traffic-free road. I had only put 10K or so on the car after a year of ownership. Changed the oil twice in that time -- Mobile One syth.
And yes, I was able to confirm all regular oil changes from the previous owner, a wonderful woman living in Florida. She emailed me the reciepts from the two changes that were not done at the dealer. I was surprised though when the dealer in Florida where she bought the car faxed me the complete service record -- there were lots of bizarre maintenance issues in the first couple of years: rear axel replaced, window lifts, broken convertible top latch, DI cassette, engine mount dampener... I guess these things happen.
I'll post again when I have the car back.
