For the record:- After removing the SID unit I was able to get my hand in behind the radio. Prior to that I slipped the blade of a putty knife all around the gap between the radio and the metal frame it slides in (radio bay). A paper label on top of the radio had peeled back which didnt help the problem but was not the main cause.
After working the radio back and forth a few times , one healthy pull managed to get it out. The back of the radio is a cast aluminium plate about 3/16 thick and the edges of this are rough. Although I see no obvious hang up point I believe the edge of this plate was binding up on the metal radio bay. I intend to smooth of the backplate with a file before putting it back.
