3rd gear hitting?

My 98 900s 5spd just developed this problem. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, the transmission/shift lever [hard to tell which] makes a grinding/hitting noise. It sort-of sounds as if the reverse lock out tube is hitting on something. The clutch is definetly fully engaged and I'm not muscling the shifter at all. Installing MP short shifter soon and I want to make sure theres no problems, and if there is then I will get the shifter installed during repairs...THANKS!
