New compressors are nearly 700 bucks - I have yet to find a reliable source of rebuilts to this day - beware of junkyard ones for 200 unless you're doing the labor yourself or you'll often pay twice as ones that are exposed to atmos. tend to sieze up -
If you replace the compressor you are supposed to replace the drier and expansion valve (50 and 40 each) because they usually get filled with crap when the compressor fails, and of course you have to refill and test the system, so add in the price of an A/C job.
This is all assuming the diagnosis is correct:
It's possible that the A/C or clutch just need adjusting - mine was sticking on/off burning the belt until I adjusted and lubed the clutch - 2 years later and it's still fine.
Don't forget these run ALL THE TIME when in A/C mode REGARDLESS of temp. chosen to help dehumidify according to the A/C manual - (you know when the front window tries to fog...)
Would be best to test the A/C compressor out of the car - if it is seizing there should be burned rubber along the entire width (all tracks) - is it possible that your tensioner is failing and grabbing? Alignment issues would show the outer edge of one side failing first. get the old belt next time it bites it (try not shut it down the moment it fails) and post the pics for us.
