The first guess I have would be the gear selector switch on top of the transmission.
Have a Saab shop check the transmission computer for fault codes.
The gear selector switch seems to go bad more when the cold season starts.
Turn the ignition on without starting the car and move the gear shifter through all the gears back and forth some 20-30 times and the problem might go away for awhile but not for good.
What happens is that inside the gear selector switch, they use a di electric grease that gets old and hard.
When it gets colder, the grease will create a thin layer on insulation between two copper surfaces that is suppose to have good contact. When that happens, the transmission computer sees it as an electrical glitch and it makes the transmission go into limp home mode.
The car starts in third gear. By moving the gear shifter back and forth you might be able to grind off that old grease and get the car going again for awhile.
