That's the high end of a fair price for a car like you describe, it better be a gem cosmetically as well as mechanically and service record type of things. $2-3k is more like the actual trade in value.
Your friend mmight be giving you the right poop. A '98 with 112k is definitely not dealer mechandise and certianly could impress with it's condition, even if fact looking near new for a pampered garage queen despite the miles.
A Saab turbo is one of the few motors that can exceed the 325e ETA engines torque, but has 50 more horsepower. And a 900SE turbo with the auto and the sport button is very satisfying for stick drivers. Should be at least as durable or more so for the next 100k and about the same to service and maintain too.
