There is a lot more than just dropping the subframe. In order to drop the subframe, you'll need to suspend the engine (using a hoist of some kind), disconnect the front wheels, with all their suspension assemblies, remove the bolts from the subframe, replace the sway bar, put it all back together. There are quite a few gotchas here for a weekend warrior:
1) rusted bolts/nuts [ From my own encounters, one rusted bolt could set back up 4-6 hours ]
2) All the fasteners in the suspension and the subframe require to be torques to very speficic values -- some average, some extra high -- 159 lbs/ft. It's a big expense to collect all the torque wrenches for this.
3) Some components requires a lot of skill to undo (ball joints, are, apparantly very tricky). Special tools are required, and even then, they can get damaged, which bring us to the next point:
4) Some of the bolts/nuts/balljoints/boots, etc. could get damaged when you try remove them. You'll need to acquire spares for all those small parts, otherwise you can get really stuck. I had been burned by this very painfully in the past. This can throw the whole undertaking back for several days, as you will not be able to reach the dealership until Monday.
In other words, there is a fair amount of risk. The risk is mostly of unexpected delays. If you have a trusted shop, it would be well worth it.
Although I can understand your suprise later when you look at the total for changing one metal rod with another.
