I just fixed this on a '94 900S and now I'm an expert. The trunk was very wet, with three sources:
Right shock tower was rusted out, letting water in. Had it welded.
Taillight gaskets leaked, removed, sealed with black RTV, no more leaks.
The whole hatchback was not making good contact with the gasket on the opening. There are two little rubber stoppers that control how tight the seal is when the hatch is down. These screw in or out for adjustment. Mine were way out so the hatch didn't set down tight. Screw them in a bit, much tighter seal.
Now the trunk is dry.
You must remove the floor trunk liner and dry it out completely. I've sprayed it down with almost a complete bottle of Odor-X, once a day for about 10 days to kill the mold and mildew smell.
