Well, my Saturday was shot today on another Saab fix'rupper adventure on my
'99 9-3 (98k miles). It is a beautiful day in Boston today (60degF)....so I went to the car wash to rinse off that pesky winter road salt. After getting thru the car wash, I emptied some trash from the back seat, and when I shut the door, the window collapsed (at least it held till after the car wash!)
I went home and pulled the door panel to investigate. Well, there is a plastic piece as the vertical slider bracket on the window regulator assembly that cracked in two. This piece connects to a horizontal slider which is clamped to the bottom of the window pane. Being only 11am, I drove to a nearby Saab dealer to get a new plastic component. However, that fix, of course, would not be so simple. That plastic piece cannot be replaced. Instead the whole regulator assembly must be bought for over $300 at dealer ($275 at online Saab store). After a few curse words, I went on the hunt for a used regulator.
I found the a '98 900 at a junk yard that uses the same part #. However, the regulator was still on the door. I had to have the big fork lifter pull off another car that was piled on top of it to be able to open the door. After getting access to the interior, I then realized the assembly is attached with several some rather sturdy rivets. I did not have a drill gun and could not pop them off with the tools I had. I thought about trying to remove the plastic piece that was cracked on my regulator, but that was impossible while it was still attached inside the door. The junk yard was closing so I called it quits.
On the way home, I contiplated how to secure the window closed for a few days until I could go back to the junk yard with the right tools. I came up with jamming a cut-to-size piece of wood to prop the window up inside the door enclosure and placing another piece on the bottom of the door to stabilize it. It is very secure and not going anywhere.
After doing this, I have made a pragmatic, decision...this will be my permanent fix. I never open the rear window so why spend $100 or more to fix it....
Ahhh, time for a beer now.
