After losing my original gas cap a few days ago, I got the wrong (non-vented) replacement from Autozone. All sorts of problems ensued. I don't know if its related. I got the right gas gap replacement today, put it on, but still have all of the same problems.
1. car constantly stinks like gasoline.
2. engine goes through sputter and die phases, as if certain cylinders aren't firing or as if something is constricting the flow of gas (or exhaust)
3. gas gauge no longer accurate
4. check engine light now on.
5. putrid sulfur white smoke smell when starting car up after engine dies.
6. interior windows covered in a foggy film that seems like moisture condensation but it is more 'thick' if that makes sense? It keeps building up despite cleaning.
7. trying to refill at the gas station, the pump keeps clicking off (signaling full tank) even though the car appears to be far from full?
I then got a vented gas cap, added Techrone fuel cleaner, a few gallons of premium gas, and took it on a long high RPM (3rd gear) highway drive. Car now seems better (engine smooth) but gas/fumes smell still very strong in car, especially in the morning when I first get in. And of course the CEL light is still on, and the engine still dies randomly and then smells like sulfur again.
The smoke that comes out is thick and white. It continues to "trickle and whisp" out of the exhaust tip after turning off the engine for about a minute or so.
What to do? Suggestions, ideas or what the problem might be?
