Hi:
new SAAB owner here, this is my first repair.
I have removed old tumbler, installed new. Remounted entire shift housing (eg: unit w/3 unique mounting bolts). At this point, car starts and electrics seem to work fine. However, I cannot shift into 5th gear.
A poster on another forum said this in response to same question/problem I post here:

The gearstick has a shaft protruding from the bottom. This should be 22.5mm in length and, if out of adjustment, will prevent 5th gear selection and reverse selection.

What is the "gearstick"? (sorry, I'm new at this. Bin manual is in the mail).
I know of 2 "shaft"(s) in the assembly:
a) aligned with key tumbler, and extending from the bottom of shift mount housing. Mine is black, +/- 3 inches long x 3/16 in diameter with 2 small splines +/- 3/8 inch from one end. I did not notice which end splines were on when I dissassembled (I noticed it only because it fell out), but seems only way was with splines inserted on "down" end.
b) shorter brass "shaft", slightly larger diameter, inserted into center reverse lock gear, also from the bottom.
Both of 'em are held in place by a floating, slightly angled "butterfly cap" (my term... does it have a name?) sitting/pivoting on a mount on bottom of entire shift mount assembly. I don't see an adjustment for either of these, nor another "shaft" w/adjustable length or depth.

I bought a HAYNES manual, learned my lesson (nothing in there about this). My Beltran manual is in the mail.
Any specifics greatly appreciated. Thanks.
