My son was on his way back to college last night and had a problem -- or several. He doesn't know much about cars so I'm trying to diagnose tihs remotely and I hope you can help.

'94 900S, 5 spd, 66K miles. We bought this car a couple of months ago. My Indie did the serpentine belt and pulleys and temp sensor a couple of weeks ago.

My son's account: squealing noise, got harder to steer, temp went up to "H"m warning lights came on including the battery light. Luckily he knew enough to call and I told him to pull over right away. The car was towed the rest of the way to his college.

My theory -- the water pump went, leaking fluid on the new serp belt, which started slipping and squealing, slipping over the pulley of the steering pump which made the steering harder. I don't know if it was just time for the water pump to go, or if the new serp belt put extra stress on it.

I have to find an indie near Saratoga Springs, NY and try to get this thing fixed by remote control, but I want to have some idea of what's up. My son won't be able to discuss this with a mechanic so I'll call them.

Theories?
