Saab -
1. From what I've heard of the sludge oil problem and the possible propensity for the car to loose an engine as early as 60k miles the warranty may be a bargain. I'd have the engine checked for sludge and see if they plan on honoring the 100k warranty for those engines based on sludge (there is some added factory warranty in some cases - find out)- I think if the oil is changed correctly there's no actual problem - I believe Saab's optimistic service interval was the cause - they've since gone to 5k, synthetic changes etc. IF you find any evidence of sludge already there, consider that warranty. Most of the bugs are probably worked out on that car w/ 32k, and most routine major maint. starts at 100k (all the rubber etc)so warranty wouldn't help then. If you're DIY (and we can help!) pass on the warranty and that cash can be used easily for upgrades or any remaining bugs and still come out ahead.
2. Get some good summer tires - bridgestone potenza RE750 or S03's are excellent as are other max or ultra high performace - go cheap and get all season and the torque steer will drive you nuts - look for ones that wear well when rotated and don't tend to cup (some models do - check tirerack.com for comments and opinion)if you opt for other brands
3. You got me there - the Saab leather is really prone to ageing from what I've experienced - Mine was bad enough I couldn't save it on either car... I'd keep it moist as much as possible and out of the sun as it seems to dry out easily!
4. Rustproofing is a scam down here in the south, but up N could be worth it as these do seem to rust in a few spots sometimes, BUT I have a 9000 that spent 5 years in Canada and Colorado in the worst conditions - the rear axle and the transmission housing are just pure rust, as the exhaust, but the underbody is perfect, no rust. The 900 was treated well at the factory, but if you park outside and run through salt you might pick up near the leading wheel wells (one of capture place from what I've seen) - if you clean off the bottom occasionally it should not happen from what I've seen - if you do rustproof, make sure to clean it throughly beforehand, including degreasing etc. as some places don't bother... but again since they can't prevent capture points it may just put off the inevitable - pockets that store salt water rust 20x faster than just exposure.
5. People have hailed both - no clear winner on these cars either - Mobil has never let anyone down that I know of, but the amsoil users claim the same (just happen to use Castrol synthic and most friends do) - pure synthetic either way is the right idea.
Enjoy your car! Love the rims on the 02's - when my 900 finally quits I'll take all my upgrades and transfer to an 02!
