How to identify failing CV Joint?

I have started to notice a noise when my car makes a hard left turn.
It is a regular monotonic muffled duk-duk-duk-duk type of groan (not a clank).

It has been described here before as a classic symptom of impending CV joint failure. I thought, "Piece of cake! Now I know what's wrong!"

Today, I looked under the car, and now things are not so easy any more:
I found 4 accordeon boots down there. Neither of them shows any kind of damage, or wear, or looseness. Everything is firm and tight. I tried to wiggle the axles: they moved about 1 mm along the long axis, but no movement in any other direction. Considering that they spend their life in motion, that seems to be quite good.

I wish there were a way to check under the boots to see if the grease is still there. The boots are clamped really tight from all sides, and could not be moved.

Is there any other way to diagnose which of the 4 joints has started to wear out?

The car is 95 NG900, approaching 120K.
