Transmission Warning light- malfunction or serious prob

Sporadically this winter, especially on cold mornings my automatic transmission warning light chimes on in my 2000 9-3 with 135K miles. The car drives normally and the light might stay on for a day or so but then it goes away. I've read other posts about the "grease" getting old and I should try shifting from P to 1 about 20-30 times to temporarily fix the issue. That's worked in the past but the last time I tried that I ran into a situation where the shifter would physically be in "P" but the display on the dash showed it stuck in "R". I turned the key to off and when I would restart everything would be back to normal..I seem to be in this pattern though of the transmission warning light chiming on cold days once every 3 weeks or so..is this just a glitch or should I start selling off assets to pay for a new tranny!!?? Thanks in advance for any insight
