thanks to all for the advice on this mess. I wound up breaking the grill and from there i was able to (barely) get to the release latch. What a HUGE pita!!! Seems the problem started with the end of the release cable somehow disconnecting from the catch lever at the front of the hood. I re-connected everything, recharged the battery, and so far so good. Word to the wise: inspect and lube your hood release cable mechanism every so often - it's a bitch to fix if it fails!!
