When the rubber boot break and all grease is thrown out, the C/V joint can click while turning and accelerating even before being worn out.
But the only way to tell is to take the C/V joint apart and inspect inner and outer races.
If no wear mark is found, you can repack the joint and put a new boot on.
If the boot is still intact, it most likely mean that the person before you just did that, cleaned and repacked an worn out joint, or that someone installed one of these cheap rebuilt axles.
