That vehicle 94-99 (excluding Viggen) is a T5 speed-density engine management system that does not have a MAF.
The IAC (idle speed control) valves get fouled with hard deposits. This is easily removed from the vehicle (and far from the paint work) and cleaned with carb spray... come back for further details. The deposits can interfere with the movement of the swing valve and create problems like the ones you report. Fouled, out of gap or incorrect plugs can contribute to this problem, as well as fouled injectors. Techron Concentrate will clean the injectors and combustion chambers as well.
Check head gasket seam for signs of leakage at the battery end and nearby sides. Look for busted and missing exhaust manifold studs while you are at it.
