As has been pointed out here, Saab went to 55's in '98 or '99. Lots of people, including myself, have gone to the 55's. Better selection in that size, and the ride will be improved on highway joints and rough roads. You will lose a smidge of handling, though (at least that is my impression). But I live in New York City and regularly drive upstate and in New Jersey, so...
If I lived in place with better roads and warm weather, I might stick with the 50's. I use Avon M550's (all season) and have been pretty happy. A bit of road noise, though, compared with the summer Kumho's I had before.
