VW and Audi have had the worst problems. They addressed the problem by requiring a higher spec oil and, in some cases, a bigger filter. In fact, A4s now use the same big filter that 1986 Jetta Diesels had.
In any case, change your oil often* and use the oil Saab recommends. These days its Mobil 1 0w-40.
*Factory change intervals are a tad long for me. My manual recommends 15,000 miles, but 2006 manuals now recommend 10,000 miles. It never hurts to change it more often if you are nervous. I like something in the 5000-7500 mile range if I'm putting any miles on the car. If I'm just pooping around town, it gets changed 3-4 times a year.
