Grease splattered inside rim

Hi,
Today while changing my oil, I noticed that there the inside of the right front rim was completely covered in thick, black grease. This same thing happened about 3 months ago, and I took it in to a local indie shop. They replaced the CV boots on both sides, saying they had failed. They also said that the joints themselves looked fine, and the invoice did not specify whether only the inner or outer (or both) boots were replaced. I'm a tad concerned now, because over the past day or 2, I've noticed a kind of metal "scooting" on metal (I hate describing noises), almost CV joint noise on stopping and applying brakes. I'm going to drop the car off at the same Indie on Monday.
By the way, the noise is certainly coming from the same rim where the grease is splattered.
I'm a little worried that if they find that a faulty boot caused a CV joint failure, they won't cover that under their warranty because they didn't actually replace the joint itself.
Perspectives, especially from a shop owner such as Anders, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Spencer
