A '97 is still an almost 10 year old car. There's lotsa' good NG900s and even OG9-3s to chose from. There's not really a bad one in the bunch although I'm finding lotsa' flack aimed at the NG900 V6's as I just bought one myself. A '98 or even a '99-2000 9-3 could be quite affordable. A turbo 9-3 is almost as good on gas as a 900S.
One big change between C900's and NG900-OG9-3's is that the C900 with an automatic was a disappointing car, some would say the auto ruined the car, whereas the newer cars have really decent 4-speed autos with sport buttons that are very tolerable for die hard stick fans.
