If I remember correctly, the less than smart system to have the remote set the alarm only was on the NG900 model.
So if you clicked on the remote to lock car and set alarm and then lost the remote, you were out of luck. If you tried to open the door with the key, the alarm would go off and the car was immobilized.
On the 9-3 and 9-5 I think the door lock using the key will unarm as well as unlock it.
You can easily try this yourself by locking and arming the car with your remote and then unlocking the car using the key.
If the door opens without setting off the alarm and you also can start the car, you are good to go.
But as I said, on the 95 and up NG900 it was not as good and that's what the service manager might have had in mind when scaring you.
Sometimes it is really difficult to keep track of what one car model can do and the other can't.
After all, the NG900 and OG9-3 looks very similar on the outside.
