My suspension started popping on bumps last fall and I thought it was bad struts or strut mounts. An Indy mechanic looked at it and said it was the ball joint going bad so I decided some experimentation was in order before blindly replacing them. I put some good synthetic grease in a syringe, injected it into the boots and then sealed it up with a drop of glue. After the grease worked its way into the joint, the noises went away and things have been fine ever since.
I think the conclusion is that the joints can be rejuvinated if they are not too far gone. The little hole in the boot will probably deteriorate and eventually cause the joint's distruction. I'm planning on replacing the lower arms and bushings in the future and the ball joints will be replaced as part of the process.
