As a safety measure I would at least make sure that the wheels and steering are tightly coupled; i.e., that there is no play in the system. So with car at standstill when you apply lateral force to either front tire the steering wheel should react. Conversely, at standstill make sure the wheels visibly and instantly react to steering wheel rotation. Maybe others more expert than I can suggest refinement to this test.
Steering is not a strong point of this car, but my '02 9-3 (mine since new)does not wander as you describe.
