Good buy, but...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Purchase 97 900 conv. $4000 Hard to shift?, Rob Saab, Wed, 15 Mar 2006 13:50:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You didn't specify which model, SE or S, turbo or not, I think it was even possible to get a V6 vert in '97, at least KBB lists it as a possibility, the point being that there's a $2,000 swing in the book between the lower and higher models. You also didn't mention the miles. If it has a lotta' miles and is only an S non turbo then it might be only an average buy. If it's an SE with low miles than it might be a steal, slightly defective or not. Mechanical things can be fixed and are to be expected, it's the cosmetics, paint, body, interior and top that make a good foundation to invest in the mechanicals.
Hard to get into gear is most often a clutch problem. Modern clutches don't slip when they're shot, they're so worn the won't disengage fully, even when adjusted correctly. 97 might even be the improved hydraulic clutch linkage. Once you do get it into gear, and therefore get the tranny innards stopped, will it go back in and out?
I'd wanna' know which mechanic your *friend* has been servicing the car with and take it to them for a pre-purchase inspection. It may only be a $4,000 car for you, but it's a $40,000 car new and it's very easy to drop a couple of thousand on routine stuff without starting out with any initial problems, like the clutch and tranny.
