After the Viggen had been out for a while in 1999, some folks played with the plugs and found that the cheap basic plugs pulled a bit better than the platinum plugs. Some hesitation or inconsistency to get on boost was also reported to be eliminated. Some of these things may be fuel related as well.
Over the years the ECU software may have tackled those issues as well.
We do not get reports of lesser performance or MPGs on the cheaper plugs.
There is no guessing involved, you can try the BPCR[6|7]ES plugs and eval this yourself. Trust your senses. Lower output engines should probably stick with the #6 heat range as the #7 would run too cold/dark. The way one drives and one's driving profile also determines if #6 or #7 is the best choice.
When getting concerned with such refinements, you need to be using the best fuel, not high ethanol, low restriction or clean at least air filter.
These comments also apply to the 9-5 Aero that uses basically the same engine. There is a low restriction snorkle tube for the 9-5 from the filter box to the front of the vehicle.
With traction control, performance in the lower gears may be limited by tire traction which could mask some improvements.
