Noise went away...what's happening?

I opened my SMBC by one full turn, and the noise is gone.
I don't quite understand what is happening. Was that noise from the turbo or the bypass valve?
Do I now start closing the SMBC until I start hearing the noise again, and back off a little? Or should I just be safe and get rid of the SMBC?
Thanks for any help.
