I think he was giving you the company line, they don't/won't put a different size on because of liability. The Mass RMV has nothing about rejecting cars because of a different size tire. It wouldn't make sense to fail cars for non-stock tires, how is the inspection place going to know what size was originally on the vehicle? My '97 900S came with 195/60/15 but the same car also came, as an option, with 205/50/16 but they later made the running change to 205/55/16, they also recommend a 185 for snows, effectively 4 different size tires for the same car all approved by the factory, multiply that by every other manufacturer and you have a big problem. I think the tire dealers will have something to say about a law like that, it would cut them out of a lot of aftermarket sales. Your car will be fine with 205/55/16 most all of the '02 9-3 had that size installed and most owners that read this board will replace the 50's with 55's, the taller sidewall and abundance of tires available make it a worth while change.
