1999 9-3 Evaporator Replacement/Boken AC

-Last spring, my AC was out in my 1999 9-3. I had it recharged and it lasted all summer. In doing so, the Saab tech did tell me that he thought my evaporator was going out, and that the AC might last or might just give out. Turned out that my AC lasted me all summer, and never caused a problem.
-Now that spring has come around again, my AC is out. I had it recharged at a respectable shop outside from home, but 2 weeks later all the 134 has leaked out. The tech who filled it up said there were 134 amounts coming through the cabin vents, and that he was picking it up coming from under the hood.
-I spoke to my Saab Tech in Norfolk, and I was told that sometimes when the evaporator does go out, a musty or mildew smell can come through when first starting up the car. Which is exactly what has happened!
-Is it true? Could my evaporator really be out? I'm having dye put in the system tomorrow to check, but from what I've heard I think he's right. I really do love my 9-3, and it's my everyday driver. However... having AC in Virginia this summer might be somewhat rough.
-Anybody else have this issue? If so how much was the procedure. I estimated that it could be $2,000 worth. What do you think?
