Sounds like a deal Posted by Peter [Email] (#2804) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Peter) on Mon, 3 Apr 2006 09:10:38 In Reply to: Possibly buying 1997 Saab 900SE Talladega, Steve, Sun, 2 Apr 2006 22:04:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Get it checked out by a mechanic, obviously. There aren't a lot of issues specific to a Saab that you'll be able to identify before failure occurs. There's a 95k service that includes timing belt. Look for a dry engine; gasket replacement can be costly. Check out the Automatic Climate Control system carefully, and listen to the A/C compressor when it engages--it should be quiet.
There are a few things that are known to fail, but you probably wont be able to suss them out a head of time: ignition cassette, idler pulley, pixels in dashboard display. some have electrical problems with headlights. Front light wipers may not work. Cosmetically, leather seats wear easily; rattles in hatch/rear seat area can drive you nuts. Clunking front susp. is easily but not cheaply fixed.
There are a lot of bogus "Talladegas" out there. My 97 VIN comes up as a talla, but it isn't. Only the ones that say "talladega" on the right rear are real one.
That sounds like a great price. You could put $1,000 into it right now for new tires or brakes and still be in pretty good shape re value, i think.
