Thanks for the various thoughts guys. Dean is right -- the ceramic is completely gone. The photo may be misleading you. I should have posted that the wires are 25k old, SAAB O.E. Bougicord. They should be OK but I will measure the resistance to double check.
I still need to see what I find on the rear plugs.
I don't have a compression tester yet but may look into it. I'll post back when/if I have more info.
Little helpful info obtained from a Google or TSN search. Preignition or plugs too hot seem to be the most likely culprits of damaged spark plug insulation. But the really unusual thing is that the other plugs were OK and that cylinder #6 has caused problems twice. I've never heard knocking on this car and the knock sensor is OK as far as I know. I can't believe the plugs are too hot; they are the factory spec and O.E., plus they work OK on the other cylinders.
My best theory so far is a bad spark plug wire to cylinder #6. That would increase the resistance which would alter the voltage and sparking, but I still can't see how that would cause this plug to be destroyed. But who knows?
