Manual Adjust Clutch Cable breaks again

I just replaced the clutch cable on my son's 1996 S for the second time in 8 months. Some of you might think this is not that unusual but somethng is not right, in my view. The cable broke right in the middle instead of at the end connections. I suspect that the reason for the premature failure might be the little support arm that causes the cable to bend at an angle and caused excess friction. When I put the new cable in, I didn't connect it to the arm in the hope that it will last longer this time.
Anyone have any similar issues with manual clutch cables breaking? On the manual cable, the adjuster is right above the spot where the support arm attaches. The automatic cables have the adjustment mechanism built into the end near the pedals. Is the support arm really needed or can I just leave it unattached?
