See my post earlier on the subject. I noticed that the readings may fluctuate wildly. I once got 32 mpg after a reset on a highway, then it stayed at 22 for about a week of exclusive city driving (too suspicious), then vent down to 16-18 -- its usual value. People who had responded that it was always accurate piqued my interest, so I decided to verify it. I used the trusted pen and paper method. I must confirm that -- in the long run -- the reading is correct. After I stopped resetting it, the number it displays now matches the fuel consumption that I calculate on paper: used fuel gallons / miles travelled.
I must add that I used to have 16 mpg for the past two years. It did not bother me, since the car is 12 years old. However, a few months ago I had to replace the vacuum lines on the throttle, and clean all the surrounding components. To my surprise, this improved my MPG to 20 mpg. Not too bad for a 12 year old car doing strictly city driving. ( The newer 9-3 that I have persistently shows 24 mpg, but it sees a stretch of a highway on its way to work every day. So it's not directly comparable.)
I wonder what fuel economy do other cars have? (of comparable size, of course) BMW, Audi, Subaru?
I remember my old C900 was very thirsty. I could only make 2 trips to Boston on one tank fill.
