Purchasing Used Saabs - 2000 9-3

I'm on my second Saab ('96 900S hatchback) but the engine was tagged by my local Saab guy as "on its last legs" which is shocking condsidering I've babied it and it only has 117K. So instead of a complete engine rebuild for $4K I am looking at used Saabs.
Dealer in my area is selling a '00 9-3 with 85K for $8900. My question is, are there any red flags with the '00 models I should know about and is the engine as sound as my old '87 900? Im not interested in getting a similar message from my mechanic 35K miles after buying such a vehicle.
Any advice or knowledge is much appreciated.
Thanks,
J. Els
