I would not suspect the ECU yet. The signal from the sender is an input on a circuit board. Highly unlikely the input would get fried spontaneously w/o other problems being evident, UNLESS it was being worked on when it happened, and by miswiring, static damage etc.

Personally, I would suspect the float, but since I am not familiar with just where the wiring goes between the fuel pump and the ecu, who knows.

I would try to troubleshoot it from the inspection cover under the back seat. You should be able to measure the signal from the sender, and also simulate the sender using a potentiometer (variable resistor) to the ecu. The sender should measure 350 Ohms with a full tank, 35 Ohms with an empty tank, so you can pretty much buy a potentiometer at Radioshack, some test leads, a multimeter, and you can prove once for all whether the float works, then go from there. You need a wiring diagram for the wires from sender to the ecu.
