Simultaneous problems with temp gauge and AC

I've been doing a lot of reading here - and there are so many great posts, to the point where I'm now confused! I'm hoping someone can help clarify a bit:
I'm getting a problem where, most of the time, my temperature gauge is dead. That is, it doesn't budge when the car is started, or when the Night Panel switch is toggled. Occasionally, it will operate normally when the car is started, then die a few minutes later. The AC (I don't have climate control) seems to be tied to this; if the gauge is working, then the AC works. As soon as the gauge dies, the AC blows warm air, and you can tell the compressor isn't kicking in when the AC switch is pressed on the panel.
I've seen a few posts with similar issues:
This post by Dean suggests problems with the sensor; is this likely to be my problem? Which sensor (there seem to be at least three referenced in different posts):

This post by Dale sounds exactly like my problem, but suggests the 'Evap Sensor'. Where would I find this? Is it basic DIY-able?

This post by Bruce suggests a useful test, is this worth doing in my case?

I have a 9-3, '99. I'm not a car techie, but can work basic stuff out with a bit of guidance (I managed to change my temp/fan control dash panel, but refilling the convertible top hydraulics was too much for me!)
Thanks all for any help.
Geoff
