Bryguy -- I've got the same car as you're looking at, except with auto tranny. The AT is good and I've been quite happy with my car, but as johnnyb points out, the timing belt is key for this engine. I don't think you have to stay away from the car, but it will drive up the maintenance cost. If that has not been done recently, have it done BEFORE buying. Search the archives for more info. Basically, the belt should be replaced with a "kit" including the belt, tensioner, and other pulleys. That will run you about $800 including labor at most dealers. Opinions vary, but in my view, you should replace the kit every 60k. If it's never been updated, it should be done immediately.
Does the car come with service records? If not I would be wary. The dealer
should be able to print out records of all dealer service ever done on it.
As for costs... can you DIY? If not, I doubt you can keep maintenance under $1200/yr. What shape are the tires in? Can you have an indy check over the car?
Other than timing belt, there's a 50-50 chance that you could keep the car running for $1200/yr or less. The 94 had numerous problems but several of that still have them on the road with this many miles may have gotten a better draw than others. There are some issues with the clutch cable, the A/C, and the suspension on the early ('94-95) NG900. Search the archives about what year is best and about buying used NG900s for more info.
Price - how does the dealer's $3500 compare to the blue book on this car? It doesn't sound terrible but doesn't sound like a hot deal either. I would think you could bargain lower. Miles are a bit low but the car is 12 years old! This particular car has at least 2 strikes against it lowering value: V6 is less in demand and '94 was the worst year of the NG900.
Good luck,
Derek / 1994 900 S V6 164,000mi
