I've seen a lot of messages on this site about all the things that could cause a 9-3's front-end to clunk. One should always start with the simplest things, before buying expensive parts!
The front swaybar bushings appear to be a pain to get at, and the clunks were getting so bad that I actually started by spending some time with a mirror and flashlight examining all of my engine mounts. They look fine. The rear one is actually best-viewed from an angle to the rear where it can be seen quite clearly. All of those appeared fine, relieving me of that fear.
I retorqued my stanchion bolts. One tip is to turn the wheels to get past the CV joints. Also, some manufacturers make L-shaped tools that will help you get onto the heads without stripping them.
I picked up a little hypodermic grease needle that a local Checker Auto had, and injected grease under the edges of the swaybar bushings at several locations each. After driving the car for a day, the grease got spread around inside those bushings, and the sound went away!
I was ready to go after the strut mounts, next, but it looks like my problem is gone, now.
