Could very well be the cable attachment to the rear of the heating control unit is not being pushed back down it's sleeve, eg it's come unclipped from the back of the unit.

If memory server ( possibly with the help of a torch ) you can see if this is operating by taking out the radio above ( presuming you have your radio security code for refitting ) and looking down. Be carefull as the metal radio surround it rather sharp at the back, I managed to get minor cuts on both my thumbs when I diagnosed mine

I've also found that it's easier to reconect the heater direction control shaft from the radio hole rather than the usually recommended taking off of the side trim
