This problem seems to be common on transmissions prior to 1997. There was a change that year to a lever that makes it easier to engage reverse. Going from 1st to reverse is the correct way to do the shift. It is supposed to align the synchros before the change. I've also had some luck rocking the car or moving it slightly backwards to get it to go into reverse. It looks bad sticking a leg out a slightly open door and pushing, but it works. This is obviously difficult if you're on a hill and pointing downward.
