If the thrust bearings bind, as you turn the wheels, the springs get wound up until the force generated in the springs overcomes the binding in the thrust bearing. At that point you can hear/feel the spring let go with a characteristic vibration. The EOM Saab thrust bearings are quite good and it is preferred to clean and repack them with grease rather than use the aftermarket bearings that come with the aftermarket mounts. But you don't know the state of the old bearings until you clean them. Aftermarket bearings worked for me, but many (not saying most!) have had problems with them.

The new control arm and swaybar design was introduced part way through 1995 production, so what you have may be factory original. Many of the old design were retrofitted by dealers and paid for by Saab as well.

The labor to replace the mounts takes you 85% of the way to replacing the strut inserts. Original mounts from 1995 are probably quite cracked and torn. That year has the mounts exposed, so you can see that at a glance.

There is no ball bearing associated with the control arms, only the mount as described above. Nothing else really needs to be replaced, but you need to inspect the ball joints, ball joint boots, tie-rod ends to see how they are before ordering parts if you plan to DIY. This is a difficult DIY for most, but many have done it and there are details available on this BB.
