Idling at 500 rpm ...

I have a 2000 Saab 93 with 110K kms on the clock. For a few weeks now it has been idling rough, as the revs drop to 500 rpms from normal 900 rpms once in a while ... it almost feels like its misfiring. It only happens at idle, or when shifting gears. I have also been getting an intermittent CEL that turns off a few minutes after the car has cooled off and restarted.
Today, though, at idle the revs drop to 500 rpm and stay there. If the car is cold, it will shut off. Also when shifting, the engine doesn't hold the revs and they quickly drop between shifts. Also, when the ignition is turned on, there is a clicking noise coming from the top of the engine, right around where the oil dipstick is ... Also, the CEL has been on the entire time today. Under WOT the boost gauge just reaches yellow in 4th and 5th gears.
I orignially thought that there is a vacuum leak somewhere until today when I heard the clicking sound.
What sensors are located in the area around the top of the engine? Does the clicking mean that a sensor is bad? Any ideas would be appreciated ...
Thanks guys
Miki
