Try disconnecting the electrical connector on the purge valve, while keeping the hoses in place. After a couple starts and a day or so that may give you a CEL, but on a '94 it may not. Then check the O2/Lambda sensor.

The ticking is the valve opening and closing, which is how the flow is controlled down to an amount small enough not to affect the normal closed loop combustion. If the valve is not opening or not closing correctly, there may be a vacuum leak through the purge system.

The ticking can be silenced by cushionning the purge valve against the metal strut tower which is transmitting the sound, but it is ticking because the valve is getting old. Some people clean it successfully with WD-40 or some other type of solvent.

Since I have the OBDII version of the system, that is about how far my knowledge extends on a '94 S.
