Rob's comment about "legally labeled as synthetic" is alluding to the same info that I was hinting at when I said "US-version." It's generally accepted in the worldwide oil industry (& European consumer market) that Group IV & V oils are "true" synthetics. Castrol knocked the US retail market for a loop when it successfully won the legal right to label Group III oil as synthetic. Their 0W-30 Syntec sold here in the US comes in two versions: a US made Grp3 version & a German made Grp4 version. Neither is marketed different from the other. Similarly, their 5W-40 Belgian made Syntec is said to be a Grp4 oil. All their other US Syntec products are Grp3 oils. Like Rob said, it's up to the consumer to learn this info on their own.
Redline is touted to be a Grp4/Grp5 blend, & the general feeling by Redline enthusiasts is that it has the highest Grp5 content of any OTC oil. Mobil's Delvac 1 (aka Truck & SUV 5W-40, or perhaps now Turbo Diesel 5W-40) is also said to be an ester-rich PAO oil. Since Mobil has the most on-going R&D & "buying power," I feel they have the best all-around package (durability, protection, cleanliness) at the best price.
