There are some old posts on the general process of working with the linkages and motors that move the vent flaps, so do a search. If you take off the cover of the (LHD) passenger's side of the front center console (may need to pull the glove box first), in the footwell, you can see the motor (a small round flat thing with one electrical connector) and an attached linkage that changes the vent position. With the trim panel removed, do the AUTO+OFF calibration and see what is moving and what isn't. You should hear the motor make a little jik-jik-jik sound, stepping through its range and see the linkage moving up and down. If nothing is moving, you can remove the stepping motor (2 screws) and see if the linkage will move by hand, and if the motor spins when it is not connected to the linkage (Auto+Off again). If thre linkage won't move by hand, then something is stuck. If it will, and the if the motor in your hand isn't spinning when you do the Auto+OFf, then the motor or the electrical connection may be the problem.
In my case, a few years ago, just taking it apart and putting it back together solved the problem because my previous mechanic (before Anders) had reassembled it out of proper alignment after replacing the heater core.
Good luck.
